T365 Recalls: Andre Agassi bows out
On this day in 2006, Andre Agassi announced his retirement from tennis after Benjamin Becker eliminated him from the US Open.
After receiving ovation that frequently drew the American to tears, it ended a career that spanned two decades and produced eight Grand Slam victories.
Following his Wimbledon departure in June, the two-time Flushing Meadows champion stated the New York event would be his last.
He had been suffering from severe back pain, which made him extremely uncomfortable anytime he was on the court.
After battling through Andrei Pavel and Marcos Baghdatis to go to the third round, Agassi's career was ended by big-serving Becker, who defeated him 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, and 7-5.
The fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium gave the hometown favourite a prolonged standing ovation after which he brushed away his emotions and made an emotional farewell speech.
